Hi there,

This week, we have been uploading some great Marwitz frames onto the website. Marwitz is a German company producing stylish and well made glasses. It has been doing this since 1919 when Mr Marwitz senior set up business near Stuttgart creating the company Mawritz & Hauser GmbH. In the 1960s Carl Zeiss, another large spectacle maker took ownership of the company, and Mr Marwitz senior continued to work for them and they produced frames under the name of  Zeiss Marwitz.

In 1970, Marwitz’s son, Hans Joachim Marwitz, set up Marwitz Conquistador in Berlin. Marwitz Conquistador is still going strong  in the ownership of the Marwitz family. Marwitz has always produced a lot of metal and combinati

on frames. We have a lovely case full of combination frames, these have a metal lower part and a plastic brow such as the Optima which is available from Dead Men’s Spex for gents with the Gents Optima and for ladies with the ladies 1960s brow line frame. Marwitz also made aviator style frames such as the stylish Condura.

Marwitz is another European spectacle maker, like Silhouette (which I blogged about recently) which is still family owned and held in high esteem. The Queen Mother had two pairs of Marwitz frames and after her death, these, along with her other glasses, were donated to The British Optical Association Museum in London where we went in May to the Optical Antiques International Collectors’ Club AGM and auction. We didn’t see the Queen Mother’s specs though!

We bought the Marwitz spectacles and promotional items from an auction house in Utrecht, Holland last October. We had a short notice trip to Holland, auctions are like that, things come up and are too good to miss, so you have to go for it!  We have been to quite a few places in the UK to collect auction hauls but this was our first international trip. My friend and I went from Hull to Rotterdam on a ‘mini cruise’ to Holland to collect our purchases. It was a great experience and we bought some fabulous items.
